Effective Leadership

What is leadership?

We consider leadership to be taking ownership of what’s going on for you and your business. Effective leaders settle on what it is they are going after, and become committed to making it reality. It’s not only the recipe for success in business, but more importantly, success in life itself.

The first step is being clear about who you are, and what you want. Businesses need to have an identity as well as a vision. Visualise what this looks like – Who's in it? What are you doing? What does it look like? Try visualising the next ten years for the business or yourself. It might seem easy to create a vision but many people find this to be the most challenging part. A lot of courage is required in being completely honest with yourself to come up with your core values. Once you have this vision, communication is essential. Communication both to yourself and to other people within your business is required.

Business leaders find that the better they are at communicating their plans to their people, the more effective they are at achieving their plan. Business owners need to ‘walk the talk’, communicate with others, and importantly, assist others to achieve what they want.

Effective leaders display the following attributes:

  • Be honest
    • Honesty is so important in getting the results you want.
  • Accept that life is hard
    • Provide education and training about why life is meant to be difficult – when people accept that and learn that, it gets easier.
  • Play at 100%
    • Those who live each day as if it’s their last find it easier to achieve what they are aiming for. Love what you do and hire the people who love what they do.
  • Take responsibility
    • Do not blame others or make excuses. The buck stops with you. You have to accept personal responsibility.
  • Take Risks
    • Exposing yourself feels vulnerable, but the benefit of challenging yourself can give you the courage to further chase your goals. We love the quote, “If nothing changes, nothing changes.”
  • Communicate
    • You need to care about your people and let them know what’s going on. If you can help other people get what they want, then you’ll always get what you want!
  • Have commitment
    • This is one of the hardest things to achieve but put simply, commitment is just doing what you say you are going to do.

Leaders accept change; in fact they embrace it. Effective leaders are those who can remove fear and replace it with confidence; they can remove confusion and replace it with clarity.

The real key to effective leadership is being able to bring together the strategy (what we are going to do), the attitude (the willingness to do it), and the execution (getting it done).
